What will happen if arts and science collide? Fun and learning together, of course! Let the students creatively explore about leaves in this activity!

Students will be studying about the parts of a leaf and will be doing colorful imprints of leaves on a bond paper and enjoy what art they could make with nature.

The students will create colorful leaf imprints that will help boost their creativity and imagination.

  • Leaves: a flattened structure of a higher plant, typically green and blade like, that is attached to a stem directly or via a stalk. Leaves are the main organs of photosynthesis and transpiration.
  • Parts: a piece or segment of something such as an object, activity, or period of time, which combined with other pieces makes up the whole.
  • Imprint: a mark made by pressing something onto a softer substance so that its outline is reproduced.
  • Diagram: a simplified drawing showing the appearance, structure, or workings of something a schematic representation.

The tutor should:

  1. Collect/gather 80 leaves of different shapes and sizes; 4 for each student.
  2. Prepare all other materials needed for the activity.
  3. Create a sample to present as an example for the students.

The tutor will ask the students to watch a video about the parts of the leaf and its functionsAdvise the students to take down some notes as they watch the video. After watching, the tutor will ask the following questions:

  • What was the video about?
  • What are the parts of the plant discussed in the video?
  • Can you name the parts and their functions?

Once the students are finished answering, tell them that they are going to create leaf art that will feature leaves and their parts.

Before ending the activity, make sure the students have cleaned their respective areas and properly disposed of their trash. 

 

 
 

After sharing their work to others, ask the students to answer these questions and share their insights:

  • What are your thoughts about the activity?
  • Would you recommend this activity to your friends/family?
  • How can you use art to raise awareness about taking care of nature? Explain.
  • Self-Awareness: Young people are able to recognize and understand their own personal identity and feelings.

  • Self-Management: Young people regulate and monitor their own behaviors, feelings, and impulses in order to make responsible decisions, maintain focus, and achieve goals.
